What is a kokedama?
It is an ancient Japanese technique that is currently spreading worldwide as a decorative alternative to traditional flowerpots. The plant grows directly within a ball of substrate and sphagnum moss, which retains moisture while allowing the roots to breathe.
How do you care of it?
Watering by soaking – submerge the kokedama in a bowl of water for 10–15 minutes once every 1–2 weeks, until the moss stops bubbling. Then, let it drain.
Light – most suitable plants prefer a bright spot away from direct sunlight. North- or west-facing windows, or a location 1–2 meters away from a window, are ideal.
Humidity – indoor air in the Czech Republic tends to be dry in winter due to heating. Mist the moss regularly with a spray bottle or place the kokedama on a tray filled with pebbles and water.
Temperature – ideally 18–24°C year-round. Do not place the kokedama in a draft or near freezing windows during winter.
Fertilizing – every 4–6 weeks, add liquid houseplant fertilizer (at half strength) to the soaking water.
Moss renewal – after 1–2 years, the moss may begin to dry out or develop mold. Simply replace it with fresh sphagnum moss; the plant will remain healthy.
Pothos
*Epipremnum aureum*, also known as pothos or devil's ivy, is a low-maintenance tropical houseplant featuring decorative green leaves with yellow marbling. Thanks to its elegant trailing habit, it is ideal for modern interiors. It thrives best in a bright spot out of direct sunlight but can also tolerate partial shade.
